Went and saw "Kick-Ass" last night. I had absolutely no idea what it was about, other than the promo poster which shows four figures in super-hero type getups. It starts off very Spider-Man-esque, with the loser kid whining about how lame his life is.
I guess this is the part where I warn about spoilers:
Spoilers ahead, yo.
Now back to the post:
Guy decides to spice up his life by becoming a superhero, except he's not very good at it (having no powers whatsoever). The result is kind of like "Rocky" in tights: guy gets his ass kicked a bunch, but refuses to give up, and eventually succeeds. Along the way he inspires a bunch of other costumed crusaders, finally gets to talk to the hot girl in his high school, and similar.
The plot of this thing is fairly predictable if you know the genre. What makes it special is the "gritty" sort of approach (a la "Sin City" and "Watchmen") except with a certain psychotic lightheartedness to it. Very odd tone, but if you were/are a comic book geek you'll probably enjoy it.
Don't take the kids. This flick is rated R for very good reasons. I saw a couple of 8-10 year olds come in at the beginning with (presumably) their mom...I can only hope they left at some point.
Minus one star for the Joe-Bob rule, for a total of 3 stars. Ted sez check it out.
