On Leaving

Last week, I was scheduled to meet with the movers to get all my stuff out of my old house, so I could sell it and move to a part of the world that isn't affected by major natural disasters every summer.

Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans, right?

The packers showed up on time, got most of my stuff boxed up, and all the time the packers and the main office we're reassuring me that the movers would be there the next day, 9 am sharp, to get 'er done.  I was suspicious, because one of the aformentioned natural disasters was due to make landfall that day.

I called the home office again, and was reassured that they'd be there.

They went so far as to call me at 8pm and promise they'd be there the next day.

And then, of course, with less than 2 hours of warning, they cancelled on me.

Fortunately, I am a paranoid SOB and had a plan B in the wings, so with the help of a few very good friends and the largest truck I could find, I moved all my stuff out of NOLA.

Cost me for truck rental (not cheap), missed flight (not cheap), two days of missed work (REALLY not cheap) and 4 days of my time.

I'm not happy with Mayflower (they suck), but I am glad to be out of the festering cesspit that is N'awlins.
